Darfur

Our synagogue, Congregation Rodef Sholom in San Rafael, California, is partnering with American Jewish World Service (AJWS) to enhance the capacity of the Guereda District Hospital in Eastern Chad. It is the only hospital in a region where there are several refugee camps with approximately 50,000 Darfuri refugees; it also serves approximately 110,000 Chadians who live in the area. All of these people are very poor and in great need. The closest hospital is almost 120 miles away.

American Jewish World Service is an international development organization motivated by Judaism's imperative to pursue justice. AJWS is dedicated to alleviating poverty, hunger and disease among the people of the developing world regardless of race, religion or nationality.

We created our CD, Sanctuary, to help our congregation support this project with AJWS. Money raised from the sale of Sanctuary will help construct and equip an operating room, birthing suite, laboratory, and pharmacy, as well as to train a Chadian medical team for the hospital that will be able to perform minor and major surgeries, internal medicine, pediatrics and emergency obstetric interventions.
